How it works

1. Tell us what you need

Complete the short form above. There is no obligation to proceed at any point.

2. We match your enquiry

We pass your details to an FCA-authorised health insurance broker whose panel suits your requirements.

3. You get advice and a quote

The broker compares the insurers available to them, explains the exclusions, and quotes on cover that fits.

How a private health insurance plan is put together

Every plan starts with a core section that pays for in-patient and day-patient treatment: hospital charges, theatre fees and the consultant's fees for eligible treatment. From there you decide how much of the rest to buy.

  • Out-patient cover — consultations, diagnostics and scans without an overnight stay. Often the biggest single lever on price.
  • Hospital list — a narrower list of hospitals reduces the premium; a wider list adds central London and premium private hospitals.
  • Excess — the amount you pay per policy year before the insurer pays. A higher excess lowers the premium.
  • Optional modules — mental health, therapies, dental and optical, and travel cover on some plans.

What affects the price you are quoted

Insurers price on age, where you live, whether you smoke, the number of people on the plan and the options you choose. Claims history and any no-claims discount also matter at renewal. Because each insurer weights these differently, two quotes for the same person can look very different — which is why comparing through a broker is usually more useful than filling in one insurer's own form.

Who private health insurance suits

It tends to appeal to people who want to choose when and where they are treated, who want quick access to a specialist opinion, or who are self-employed and cannot afford a long wait. It is not a replacement for the NHS: emergency care and long-term chronic condition management stay with the NHS, and a policy will not cover conditions you already have unless the insurer specifically agrees to.

Typically covered

  • Private in-patient and day-case surgery for new conditions
  • Specialist consultations, where out-patient cover is included
  • MRI, CT and other diagnostic scans within your plan limits
  • Cancer treatment at the level of cover you select
  • A choice of hospitals from your chosen list

Typically not covered

  • • Conditions that existed before the policy started
  • • Ongoing management of chronic conditions
  • • Accident and emergency admissions
  • • Routine pregnancy, childbirth and most fertility treatment
  • • Cosmetic and elective procedures

Cover, limits and exclusions vary between insurers and policies. Your broker will confirm exactly what is and is not covered before you buy.
