Health insurance policy terms explained

Cover, exclusions, limits and excess are policy terms. Their exact meaning and operation depend on the insurer’s documents.

Cover and limits

Private medical insurance can pay towards eligible private medical treatment. Policies do not all provide the same cover. MoneyHelper explains that the extent of cover depends on the policy and provider.

A limit describes a boundary on a benefit, such as the amount payable or the treatments included. A general description on a website is not confirmation that a particular treatment is covered.

Exclusions and pre-existing conditions

An exclusion is something a policy does not cover. MoneyHelper notes that pre-existing conditions are not usually covered by private medical insurance. The insurer’s definition and policy terms determine how a person’s medical history is treated.

This guide does not decide whether any condition or treatment would be covered. That requires the specific policy wording and the insurer’s decision.

What is an excess?

An excess is an amount the policyholder agrees to pay towards a claim. The amount and the way it applies are set out in the policy documents. It does not have an identical operation across every policy.

Who explains the individual policy?

The insurer’s policy documents set out the contract. A broker can explain the terms of a quotation and the service they provide. health-quote.co.uk makes introductions only; this guide is general information, not a recommendation or advice about cover.
